Spring Break! Can I Travel Safely with my CBD Products?

It’s an incredibly common question. You’re gearing up for a trip or an escape, hoping to bring your favorite CBD products with you on the plane for some added relaxation at your destination and ease in transit. You visualize slipping a bottle of CBD tincture into your toiletry bag…. And then you wonder: is that legal? Is that ok? Will I get searched by TSA? Will my beloved CBD be confiscated? These are all great questions. Congratulate yourself for thinking ahead! 

Like so many damn things when it comes to CBD and cannabis regulations: this one is murky and highly dependent on which state or country you will be traveling to. A few things to keep in mind though before we get into the weeds. Our umbrella statement is this: traveling with a non-smokeable CBD product that is extremely low THC should be safe in the majority of travel situations. If you use CBD daily for anxiety, or otherwise plan to consume a lot of it, you will need to be more careful about creatively packing all of that product into your luggage. 

Firstly, travel only with CBD products that are 0.3% THC or less. This is the new TSA-approved limit so play it safe and respect it! 

Secondly, if you are flying out of Burlington, Boston, or Hartford airports, CBD is definitely legal to bring into the airport and onto the plane with you. We advise to keep the amount you travel with modest. A suitcase full of gummies or CBD body oil is just odd enough to tick off the suspicions of TSA, and you don’t want that. 

Do your own due diligence and check on the status of cannabis use in your destination. Most states in the U.S. have some form of decriminalization going on, and if they haven’t legalized cannabis, they have all legalized hemp-derived CBD. This is NOT true for the bulk of international destinations. 

For quick reference, we’ve outlined the CBD rules in 5 popular spring break travel destinations:

Cancun

CBD is legal AND available in Mexico. However, Mexican regulators aren’t keen on travelers bringing their own into the country. If you absolutely must bring your CBD with you, Quora users recommend bringing it in a non-smokeable form (gummies, gel caps, or tincture). 

Las Vegas

CBD is legal, available, and you can bring your own to Las Vegas, Nevada. 

New Orleans

Bring your own CBD or buy some from a local producer in New Orleans, Louisiana. 

Miami

Florida is a tricky one! While CBD is technically legal nation-wide, all states vary on enforcement. Florida is a state with an anti-cannabis history and according to the blog Premium Jane, CBD users can still be stopped by police. Bring your own CBD but don’t consume it in public. As Premium Jane writes: “it’s still a bit of a no-man’s land. There is no official legislation in place to say what’s legal and what’s not.”

Whistler, British Columbia

Pack some CBD in whatever form you like for your trip to British Columbia. The substance is fully legal there.
